There's a feeling of
professionalism, passion and joy throughout the debut CD of music theatre and cabaret
performer Tyran Parke, largely inspired by his portrayal of George in Sunday In The
Park With George in 2007.
That production may have been in Penrith, and it may have only been for a few
weeks, but it clearly had a profound impact on Parke, much of which can be heard
throughout his album.
Sunday In The Parke is like a chilled white wine on the balcony of a
beachfront apartment on a hot summer's day.
The album kicks off with a strong musical theatre feel - beginning with a touch of Sunday
In The Parke With George before the Steven Lutvak number 'I Just Wanted You To Know'
which is fun and vibrant and sets the tone for the rest of the album.
There's some slower, more profound numbers, including 'Finishing The Hat' by
Stephen Sondheim and John Bucchino's 'Playbill', but it is the slightly lesser known work
where Park shines as a vocalist.
For example, the beautiful and haunting 'You're Already There' by David Friedman
almost brings a tear to the eye. The remarkable tale of a single man, summing up his
search for a partner and re-assuring himself that someone is out there waiting is truly
beautiful and one of the highlights of the album.
Another Friedman track, 'Catch Me', is also included here and is performed
superbly, but it is Matthew Robinson's 'Just Say' at the end of the album that proves as a
real pleaser. It's another "life moment" kind of song - much like Friedman's
'You're Already There' and to hear Parke, a talented fresh singer, performing the work of
new writer Matthew Robinson is a real treat.
Parke's CD is a superb mix of well-known songs, hidden classics and fresh, vibrant
material. It is full of songs with meaning and heart, and Parke's debut is very much a
winner.
