SHIRE MUSIC THEATRE

Strathfield Musical Society
Miranda Musical Society
Shire Music Theatre
Shire Music Theatre (formerly The Sutherland Shire Light Opera Company) has a long history in the Shire - 30 years to be exact. 2004 marked our 30th year in Community Theatre. SMT is a boutique style music theatre company and is fast gaining a reputation for tackling musical theatre works which are not often performed by other companies. In November 2006 Shire Music Theatre will be staging the Tribal Love Rock Musical – HAIR !

Each year we produce between 3 to 4 musical productions. Shire Music Theatre is proud to announce their 2007 season: Merrily We Roll Along in May, Leader of the Pack in August and Blood Brothers in November. To book for any of our productions, please contact our Ticket Manager on 8230 0668 and check out www.shiremusictheatre.org.au for more details!

Additionally, we run a Concert Series each year, which continues to be extremely popular amongst music lovers. These up-market events vary greatly in style ranging from Classical/Operetta to Broadway Melodies with the occasional concert showcasing our junior talent. In 2007 we will be presenting a concert featuring Rogers and Hammerstein classics and later in the year, our concert theme will be “A tribute to the Oscars”.

To continue to grow, our company recognises the need for our less experienced members to be given instruction along the way. Accordingly, we hold regular workshops in acting, singing, stage makeup etc. These workshops are not just designed for juniors, but also cater for adults and are always great fun!

We take great pride in watching the progress of our junior members, who gain a great deal of knowledge, experience and self-esteem from performing with our Company. Indeed, several of our former junior members now have wonderful careers in professional theatre.

To help grow the company, we are constantly on the lookout for new members of all ages and levels of experience. Musical theatre brings so many different arts together, so if you can sing, dance, act, paint, build, sew or you'd just like to have some fun, we'd love to hear from you.

COMING IN NOVEMBER: HAIR

Most will remember or recognise the tunes from the musical Hair and the movie of the same name which appeared in 1979 receiving world wide acclaim. Some memorable songs include, ‘Aquarius’, ‘Let The Sunshine In’ and the title theme ‘Hair’. Hair follows a tribe of politically-active hippies in the sixties; taking a snapshot of their lives and tackling the issues they faced including sexuality, drugs and the Vietnam War. Hair was a revolutionary piece of theatre in its time containing nudity on stage which caused much controversy.

Featuring a highly talented cast of local performers, Hair will have you dancing in the aisles then pulling out the flares when you get home, hoping they still fit! Hair features Stephen Halstead as the hippy leader ‘Berger’ and Jeremy Fleming as the protagonist ‘Claude’. Hair also features a host of regular Shire Music Theatre performers and talented newcomers.

Taking the creative reins for this production will be; Director/Choreographer: Sonja Benson of Caringbah and Musical Director: Dean Turner of Alfords Point

HAIR will be performed 10, 11, 12, 15, 17, 18 and 19 November 2006 at Sutherland Memorial Arts Theatre, East Parade Sutherland.
