Keane Fletcher and Liz StilesHow much sex is too much sex? That's the question Hello Again essentially asks through its 80 minutes of affairs, innuendo, liaisons and love, and the answer really does lie in the tastes of each individual viewing what's happening on stage.

It's 15 years since this musical was first staged in New York. Michael John LaChiusa based the show on La Ronde by Arthur Schnitzler, penned in 1900 and eventually performed in 1921 (a production that was shut down due to its graphic nature).

At a deeper level, the show is about how sex and desire can shape one's personality. On a more simpler surface, it's a quirky merry-go-round of sexual encounters. The whore sleeps with the soldier, the soldier sleeps with the nurse, the nurse sleeps with the college boy - you get the picture.

The music criss-crosses various styles of the 20th century, with a character from each scene thrown into another era in the next, showing how the ramifications of sex has changed - or in some cases, hasn't changed.

The challenge Hello Again faces is that there is no over-riding story, and while links exist between scenes thanks to the cross-over of characters there is no glue to stick each piece together and ultimately the format threatens to get tiresome and dull. The way this piece can escape running off the rails is via a solid cast with stand-out performances and this production has many of them.

As the Nurse, Liz Stiles is delightful - graceful, innocent and vulnerable in her first liaison, and sexy, commanding and strong in the second. She is one of the show's highlights and has a beautiful elegance about her, and with her major professional theatre debut coming up later this year, there's little doubt we'll hear much more from this recent WAAPA graduate.

Katrina Retallick lives up to her solid reputation with a funny and strongly acted performance as The Young Wife, while Matt Young as The Husband and Keane Fletcher as The College Boy both put in fine performances.

The show is stolen by Zack Curran and Gareth Keegan, two 2007 WAAPA graduates who have a freshness about them that gives this production a whole new level of excitement. Their at times touching, at times humerous and at times heartbreaking scenes together are the best in the show, and Curran in particular has superb vocal ability and boy, can he move.

However, despite solid performances from most and clever ideas in terms of overall production, there's a feeling that something isn't quite right here. The piece is over-choreographed and much of the dance elements simply don't work in the small Darlinghurst Theatre space, and there's a lack of chemistry between the actors at times (particularly the male/female scenes). For a show about sex, Hello Again simply isn't sexy enough, with many of the sex scenes feeling awkward and unconvincing.

On the whole Hello Again runs smoothly across its 80 minutes and is an interesting look at love and luck, or the lack of it. It needs a few screws tightened but it's good fun, even if it does lack a "wow" moment when everything finally comes full circle.
