Mauve Higgins is a lovely Irish girl with a dry,
sarcastic wit and a unique understated manner. Quirky and fun, her new comedy show is a
recipe for a good laugh.
Ha Ha Yum has a 1950s flavour that loosely parallels a time when all a woman
needed to do was bake and pretend to be happy. But Mauve is a cheeky and clever example of
a street wise modern girl.
Mauve and her special guest Caludia ODoherty are genuine, charming, a joy to watch
and delightfully hilarious.
Claudia ODoherty, wore a fire-proof racing suit, as she made chocolate crackles and
iced cup cakes on the stage. Mauve was dressed in a classically stylish 1950s dress, as
she dished up dry ditties about her family, home and down to earth experiences. She
engaged each member of the audience with her opinions on the world, her multitude of
siblings and home life in Ireland. Subjects included her twisted and delightful attitude
towards her cats, her practical mother, some deliciously awkward moments, babies, ex
boyfriends and late night drunken texting.
With consistent timing and style, Mauve jumps from one subject to another with a confident
yet relaxed pace; just like having a cup of tea with your mate, while she serves up the
hilarious renditions of her existence.
The only real downer was the over-the-top vibe of the Melbourne Town Hall. The
intimidating comedy hub was an unflattering venue for this laid back and comfortable show.
Well done to both Mauve and Claudia for creating such an oasis within a storm of hype.
Production aspects of the show were a little under cooked. Some effort was made to create
a pretty 1950s atmosphere on stage, but a little more focus on this area would further
highlight the warm and likeable performances and material.
Ha Ha Yum is personal and unpretentious. A hilarious example of feminine feminism at
its most intelligent. Yum!
Plus the cup cake I had at the end of the show was a nice touch.
