Concept By: Hayden Tee, Les Solomon, Nigel Ubrihien

Australian Premiere: SBW Stables Theatre, Sydney. May 23, 2003.

The Lowdown:
Muf-Tee became a cult cabaret hit in Sydney throughout 2003. The show was a "chat show" style cabaret concept hosted by Hayden Tee, and featured a variety of musical theatre guests on a weekly basis. Guests during it's incredible run included Judi Connelli, Sharon Millerchip, Phil Scott, Eddie Perfect, Genevieve Lemon, Belinda Wollaston, Lucy Durack and Tim Draxl.

The show ran at 11:00pm on both Friday and Saturday nights and changed weekly.

AussieTheatre.com Review (of return season, 2004):
Muftee is back in town with a whole new look. The cult show that last year ran longer than most musicals in Sydney with it’s host Hayden Tee, has just returned from New York where he not only performed his own cabaret show, but also gave the New Yorkers a peek at Muftee.

This year every week will be based around a different Broadway musical that Hayden saw in New York. Tee and Ubrihien, co hosts of Muftee are a funny and entertaining duo, who not only bounce off each other with quips and jokes, but also constantly get the audience involved in their banter. Hayden parts the sea that is the audience making people move so he can nimbly climb up the seating to his victim.

Muftee
opened this weekend in Sydney with a fantastic array of special guests. Amanda Levy currently playing Cathy from The Last Five Years at the Stables Theatre began the evening singing a song from the show. Having seen The Last Five Years there are other songs that would have probably been a better option to showcase the intensity and the excellence of Jason Robert Brown’s musical.

Voice Squad, a Sydney based vocal ensemble who sing solely a cappella wowed the audience with their rendition of Madonna’s Material Girl. Their ability to capture the backing music and even the drumbeat of the hit song, as well as sing the lyrics was fascinating to watch. Their vocal range, especially with the male voices is especially awe-inspiring and no doubt they were a highlight of the night.

The final guest was worth the wait on the muggy and steamy Friday night. Tim Draxl who is currently making the break into film and television, most recently starring in the movie Swimming Upstream with Geoffrey Rush and Judy Davis has a voice that can only be referred to as rich, indulgent and decadent. His smooth and sultry rendition of ‘You Go To My Head’ had him ‘intoxicating [the audience’s] soul with [his] eyes’. His laid back manner and his obvious enjoyment in singing was a real treat to watch.

All in all a thoroughly entertaining evening, which is well worth staying up past your bedtime for!
