Classic show's spirit
shines in rehearsals

The cast of Kookaburra's forthcoming production
of Little Women.
Day one of Little Women rehearsals,
and there's barely a dry eye in the room. Deeply moved by the first reading of the musical
based on the classic book of the same name, the cast, and even director Stuart Maunder,
reach for the tissues. It's clear that this is going to be an emotional ride.
And the cast know that they have plenty to live up to. A generation was inspired by
the Louisa May Alcott novel, another by the classic 1949 film version starring Elizabeth
Taylor and a new legion of fans has been garnered by the 1994 film. Almost every audience
member will have some sort of expectation.
"It's a bit of a pressure," said Octavia Barron-Martin, who plays Meg.
"I'm doing all of my reading and research and hoping that will do the trick
because there's certainly a lot of history with the piece.
"I have read the book and seen all of the movies but I don't think I have
really connected with it until now, its truly beautiful."
Directed by Stuart Maunder, the musical is being produced by Kookaburra and opens
at the Seymour Centre in Sydney next month.
Jodie Harris, who plays Beth, said the audience reach for the show is quite large.
"It's something that everybody knows and I am sure there will be many mums and
daughters coming along to see it," she said.
"It's a beautiful show and so exciting to be a part of."
Harris, who appeared in The Hatpin earlier this year, was full of praise
for Kookaburra, saying it is a welcome addition to the theatre scene, particularly for
younger performers who are just getting their start in the industry.
"I think what they stand for and what they represent and what they're trying
to do in the industry is so wonderful," she said.
"They are so welcoming and excellent to work with so the entire experience has
been really good so far."
Little Women also stars Kate Maree Hoolihan, Hayden Tee, David Harris,
Erica Lovell, Stephen Mahy, Phillip Hinton, Trisha Noble and Judi Connelli.
The show opens on November 4. Bookings: (02) 9351 7940.
