A Special Interview with Alexis Fishman

Alexis Fishman as DustyAlexis Fishman has one of the key roles in the new Australian musical Dusty. In a special AussieTheatre.com interview with Troy Dodds, Alexis speaks about the new $6 million production, the audition process and working with some of theatre’s biggest names….

TD: How has the Dusty experience been for you?

AF: Fabulous! It is so rare in this country to work on a brand new show and play such an integral part in its development. The script was constantly being updated and improved in rehearsals and Stuart (Maunder - our director) would come to us with new lines and we were able to say: "Could I try this? What if I were to say that?" and see what worked on the floor. It has really been a very exciting experience.

TD: The audition process was quite daunting - in fact I understand it was down to two people for your role for quite a while - how did you feel when you found out you got the role?

AF: Well thankfully I only had to wait two days between the final audition and being offered the role - I say thankfully because it was very stressful! I guess I had a good feeling about it so I put a lot of pressure on myself in the hope it would come through. When it did I was over the moon - and suitably relieved!

TD: How was working with someone like Tamsin Carroll been?

AF: Tamsin is such a phenomenal performer and it has been an honour to share the stage with her. She inspires me nightly and has taught me so much. And such a gorgeous person as well!

TD: You must feel fortunate to make your professional debut at such a young age?

AF: I feel incredibly fortunate. This role is such a blessing and I love coming into the theatre each night. I work with a great bunch of people, we just have so much fun together!

TD: Where are you headed next?

AF: I haven't really thought about it! Right now I'm just happy to be working and giving all my energy to Dusty.
