2006
AussieTheatre.com Awards
AussieTheatre.com readers have thrown their
support behind the new Australian musical Priscilla, with the tuner dominating
the 2006 AussieTheatre.com Awards.
The show won the coveted Best Musical category in a closely fought battle with Hedwig
and the Angry Inch and Titanic, while Tony Sheldon easily won the Best Male
Actor in a Musical category.
Sophie Carter won Best Ensemble Member in a Musical, while director Simon Phillips - who
is also the Artistic Director of the Melbourne Theatre Company - won the award for Most
Outstanding Contribution to Theatre in 2006.
Priscilla opened at the Lyric Theatre in Sydney in early October and has built
into a strong success story, recently topping 100,000 sales and looking forward to a
strong summer and Mardi Gras period.
The successful Griffin Theatre Company play Holding The Man won Best Play, while
Luke Barron's 10 Things I Hate About Cabaret was a clear and dominant winner of
the Best Cabaret Show category.
In the tightest battle of all, Belinda Wollaston received the three final votes from
readers to narrowly win Best Cabaret Artist.
The AussieTheatre.com Awards are held annually, and winners are chosen completely by the
website's readers, who also had a say in the nominations along with an expert industry
